Here you read all about the winners of the Frans de Wit award, since the start of the annual exhibition in public space 'Beelden in Leiden' (BIL) in 2012. The Frans de Wit award is intended as an encouragement for a young artist, presented by a professional jury at the opening of
BIL
Young visual artists are invited to create a new work of art for BIL. The work must have a certain layering and must be able to withstand repeated viewing, during which the meaning of the work can continually shift. The work must be an open space for the viewer in which he must find his own way to a possible meaning. The work opens up a space in which the world, things and our lives (can) appear in a different way than we are used to.
This is in line with the approach of Frans de Wit. For Frans, 'the place' was the starting point for his sculptures. Their dimensions ensured that his works of art are in balance with people, nature and the environment. Frans chose various materials. Characteristic of his work is that he processed the materials with his own hands. This method largely determined the sculpture, which grew during the creation process.
